Savannah Public Records at a Glance

Georgia law presumes that existing government records may be inspected or copied unless a statute makes them confidential. Access to Savannah public records still depends on the record type. A deed index may be open while a protected filing within the same system is restricted. A court docket may show public events while sealed documents remain absent. Current birth certificates have firm eligibility rules, and motor vehicle data is governed by separate law.

Adoption and juvenile files, sealed cases, protected addresses, confidential identifiers, and some active-investigation or victim material are closed or redacted. The voter system has its own rules, described with its fields and limits in the Savannah voter records reference.

Two Chatham Clerk Record Systems

The Chatham County Clerk of Superior Court serves two roles that are easy to confuse. The Real Estate Division records deeds, security deeds, liens, plats, real-estate UCC filings, trade names, and partnerships. The same constitutional office also keeps Superior Court civil, domestic, felony, and criminal files. Those Savannah public records share a custodian because the combined constitutional office dates to 1798.

Index dates and names point to an instrument or case, while the recorded image or court file supplies the actual text and context.

Savannah Deed Records Search Fields

Select Chatham County before searching the clerk-authority real-estate index. A grantor is a party transferring an interest; a grantee receives it. Broad surnames work best with a date range or instrument type. An exact book and page, or an instrument number, gives a more direct route. No official, stable start year was located for Chatham's complete online coverage, so a blank result should not be treated as proof that no deed exists.

A typical result identifies county, parties, document type, recording date, book and page or instrument number, legal-description references, cross-references, and an image link when authorized. A deed shows a conveyance, not who lived on the land. Plain copies are stated at $0.50 per page, and electronic certification is available through GSCCCA.

When Savannah Records Are Offline

The online index is only one channel. The Real Estate counter is in Room 304 of the Tom Coleman Judicial Courthouse, 133 Montgomery Street, and operates weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Southside location at 1117 Eisenhower Drive, Suite A, has public computers and provides regular or certified copies. Copy requests for deeds, liens, and plats may also go by mail to P.O. Box 10227, Savannah, GA 31412. Call 912-434-8970 or 912-434-8920, option 3, to confirm cost.

The Garden City Records Center, 4225 Augusta Road, Suite C, is the key older-file fallback. By appointment, it provides access to older deed books, plats, maps, microfilm, and criminal, civil, and domestic court files. Public terminals handle newer records, while scanners and printers bridge microfilm to usable copies.

Note: Confirm the appointment procedure before visiting the Garden City Records Center, since physical retrieval can differ from terminal access.

Savannah Public Records Offices

The correct counter depends on the document. Land and Superior Court work begin with the Chatham clerk. Probate keeps estates, wills, guardianships, and modern county marriage files. Property facts are split among the assessor, tax office, map, and deed system. These contacts keep a request with the office that can answer it.

Probate staff research costs $10. Uncertified copies cost $1 per page; a one-page certified copy costs $10, then $1 for each added page. Exemplification costs $15 plus $1 per page. Mail payment must be a money order or cashier's check.

Savannah Court Records by Jurisdiction

Savannah cases may land in Superior, State, Magistrate, Probate, Juvenile, or Recorder's Court. Superior handles felonies, divorce, title, equity, and broad civil matters. State hears many civil and misdemeanor matters. Magistrate has small claims, warrants, and other limited work. Probate covers estates, guardianship, and marriage, while Recorder's Court handles traffic and local ordinance cases.

Search re:SearchGA by location or court, case number, party or business name, person-name fields, filed-date range, and available case type or status. Registration may be required. A public docket can show the case number, style, type, filing date, status, parties and roles, lawyers, judge, events, hearings, disposition, and open document links. Printing is stated locally at $0.50.

For a final civil or family order, contact the Civil Division at 400 W. Oglethorpe Avenue, Suite 178, or mail the clerk. Older files return to Garden City. Federal Southern District of Georgia cases use PACER. A docket allegation, arrest, charge, or bond is not a conviction, so the final disposition matters.

Savannah Property Records in Layers

Four records answer four different questions. The assessment roll names the assessed owner and gives mailing and situs addresses. Situs means the parcel's physical location. The tax account tracks billing and payment. SAGIS maps the parcel and adds jurisdiction, zoning, flood, and district context. The deed proves the recorded conveyance. A mailing address, situs address, and legal description may all differ without any error.

Search by owner through the property-record service, or use address and parcel identification number in the map. Capture the assessment year, PIN, legal description, and both addresses. Homestead flags may suggest owner occupancy at assessment time, but they can lag. A map layer does not prove ownership, and a permit applicant may be an agent rather than an occupant.

Savannah Vital Record Access

Georgia DPH and county vital offices issue birth and death certificates from January 1919 forward. Birth certified copies are limited to the registrant and qualifying family or legal representatives. Certified death copies also require a qualifying relationship, but current state guidance lets the public order a plain-paper death record with the Social Security number redacted. Georgia vital-record confidentiality comes from O.C.G.A. Title 31, chapter 10.

The state fee is $25 for the search and first birth or death copy, plus $5 for each added copy in the same order. Channels include approved online ordering, postal mail, the state counter, and county offices. Mail applications need a signed form, photo identification, and approved payment. Chatham Health Department at 1395 Eisenhower Drive handles local appointments.

Chatham Probate is the source for marriage records before 1952 and after 1996; DPH holds marriage records from 1952 through 1996 and charges $10 for a search or certification. Savannah Custody and Registry Records

The Chatham County Sheriff inmate system can expose booking identity, custody, charges, bond, and status when available. The Georgia Department of Corrections query searches by GDC identification, case number, name, and selected traits. The GBI registry supports name and geographic searches and may display a photograph, identifiers, offense, address, status, and compliance details.

The registry image illustrates an official lookup, not a full court history. Confirm changing custody, charges, and disposition with the agency and court file, and never use registry data to threaten or harass.

Older Savannah Records Beyond Courts

Libraries and archives fill gaps left by modern agency portals. Live Oak Public Libraries offers a catalog, local branches, city and telephone directories, yearbooks, newspapers, neighborhood histories, and genealogy databases. Some tools require a card or in-branch use, and local-history items may not circulate.

The library entry point is useful when an official certificate is restricted or when a family trail predates statewide birth and death registration. A directory, newspaper, cemetery register, or probate file can supply dates and relationships, but it does not become a certified vital record.

The Savannah Municipal Archives holds government records, photographs, maps, plans, and departmental series tied to municipal service, property, and civic life.

The archives screen represents a distinct access channel: search finding aids first, then send staff the collection, box or folder, date, and name variants. Not every series is digitized.

Privacy Limits on Savannah Records

Public does not mean every field is released. Agencies must withhold exempt material while producing the segregable, or separable, open remainder. Social Security and account numbers may be redacted. Motor vehicle personal data is limited by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act. Sealed court cases, adoption and juvenile files, and protected victim details are not proper public name-search targets.

Georgia Safe at Home, codified at O.C.G.A. § 50-18-150 and following sections, gives qualified survivors an address substitute, mail forwarding, and confidential voter registration. State and local records mask the participant's residence. Do not try to reconstruct that address from other systems.

When a public copy contains an error, correction or restriction follows the law and procedure for that record. Removal from a private index does not erase the source filed with a government office.

Request Savannah Public Records

The Georgia Open Records Act, O.C.G.A. §§ 50-18-70 through 50-18-77, applies to existing records. A request may be oral, but writing preserves enforcement rights. The agency has three business days to produce the material or describe when it will be ready and what it will cost. A denial must cite a specific exemption. The Act does not require an office to create a new report.

1. Identify the office that created or keeps the record. City administrative files use Savannah's open-records route; county files use the Chatham custodian.
2. Describe an existing record with names, dates, addresses, case or instrument numbers, and the responsible department. State the desired electronic or paper format.
3. Ask for a cost estimate and the redacted remainder if part is exempt. The first 15 minutes of qualified staff time are free.
4. Review the response within the three-business-day window. The general paper ceiling is $0.25 per page unless another law controls, and estimates above $500 may require prepayment.
5. If denied, request the cited exemption, narrow the scope when useful, and contact the Georgia Attorney General Open Government Mediation Program or seek Superior Court enforcement.

Search, retrieval, review, redaction, and production charges must be reasonable and use the lowest-paid qualified employee. Electronic media may be charged at actual cost. Specific clerk, probate, and vital-copy statutes can set different prices.
